Tax Updates from COVID-19
This page was update 6/8/2020

Beware of Scammers. There has been a marked increase in scams related to COVID-19. Please be very vigilant. As always, remember the IRS will never email you and rarely ever call you. If someone calls you stating they are from the IRS and you are not expecting their call, it is best practice to not provide any information and end the call. You can then call a known IRS number directly to follow-up on your account.

Tax Extension Dates Summary and IRS Changes

Part I: Federal Income Taxes

  • 2019 Taxes

    • Filing and payment for 2019 taxes extended to 7/15/2020.  This is an automatic extension for all taxpayers.

  • 2020 Estimated Taxes

    • First and second installment due dates extended to 7/15/2020

    • Third and fourth installment due dates remain unchanged:  9/15/2020 and 1/15/2021, respectively

  • Existing Installment Agreements with the IRS

    • The IRS is suspending payments from 4/1/20 to 7/15/20. Interest will still accrue during this time. If you manually submit payment each month, you can forgo these payments without your agreement going into default.

    • If you have direct debit set-up for your agreement, you will need to call the IRS and request your payment be suspended. Last we checked, you will need to call in each month to suspend that month's payment as the IRS system only allows them to stop payment for one month at a time.

  • Power of Attorney and IRS Support

    • Unless we have an existing power of attorney on file for you with the IRS, we are unable to submit one for the time being. The IRS has made cutbacks to their staff to reduce exposure to COVID-19 and they are currently not accepting new power of attorney designations.
